This week the submission for the technical paper is on Friday (03 June 2022). Then proceed to complete the Thesis and provide more research of details on the result of this project as commented on Presentation day last week.
PROGRESS REPORT ON "DEVELOPMENT OF BRAIN TUMOR DETECTION SYSTEM USING IMAGE PROCESSING"
Friday, June 3, 2022
WEEK 13: PRESENTATION DAY
Today is Presentation Day, and the presentation started around 2.30 pm on an online platform Microsoft Teams. The assessors who assessed me were Dr. Ahmad Sabry Mohamad and Dr. Hasmiza Harun. Both lecturers are from the Medical Electronics Section. The whole presentation went well.
There are some comments from assessors on the results. I need to be more detailed in classifying the MRI images in every approach method (anisotropic filtering, image segmentation, and morphological operation.
WEEK 12: WORKSHOP 6
- Documentation for claim
- Progress and proposal report submission
- How, when, and where to upload the document/ report submission
WEEK 11: WORKSHOP 5
Wednesday, 11 May 2022
Today's workshop on Technical Paper Preparation. The workshop is managed by Dr. Punithavathi from Telecommunication Technology Section. The highlight of this workshop is the element consisting of a technical paper.
WEEK 10: OVERVIEW CHAPTER 3 (METHODOLOGY)
Tuesday, 03 May 2022
The most proposed previous methodology has been changed for better performance in this project analysis. Also, to define whether the brain of the MRI images has a tumor or not have to use the MATLAB app, not GUI, as previously method proposed. Below are the previous and new approaches to achieving the objectives of this project.
New methods also include three stages: Anisotropic filtering, Image segmentation, and morphological operation. Anisotropic filtering is an alternate process to pre-processing and image enhancement by reducing noise in MRI images. While the morphological operation has been used to detect and specify the location of the presence of the tumor by that to achieve the objectives as stated. The results display using app designer in MATLAB to give a better perspective of the operations performance.

WEEK 7: WORKSHOP 3
WEEK 6: SEGMENTATION PROCESS
This week, I will focus on the segmented image process to detect brain tumors from the MRI images.
In short, Image segmentation involves converting an image into a collection of regions of pixels that are represented by a mask or a labeled image. By dividing an image into segments, it can process only the important segments of the image instead of processing the entire image.
Below some techniques that follow this approach are region growing, clustering, and thresholding.
Region Growing
Region growing is a simple region-based (also classified as a pixel-based) image segmentation method. A popularly used algorithm is active contour, which examines neighboring pixels of initial seed points and determines iteratively whether the pixel neighbors should be added to the region. This segmentation also can perform on images using the Image Segmenter app.
Clustering
This technique creates a segmented labeled image using a specific clustering algorithm. Using K-means clustering-based segmentation, imsegkmeans segments an image into K number of clusters.
Thresholding
Using Otsu’s method, imbinarize performs thresholding on a 2D or 3D grayscale image to create a binary image. To produce a binary image from an RGB color image, use rgb2gray to first convert it to a grayscale image.

WEEK 5: WORKSHOP 2
Sunday, March 20, 2022
WEEK 4: MEETING SUPERVISOR
Wednesday, 16 March 2022.
This week the meeting was held with the supervisor (Madam Azliza) to discuss FYP progress and be reminded of the important dates such as Presentation Day also the submission of a report, technical paper, and others.
The picture below shows the beginning of this project by creating the column to load the MRI images of the brain, segmenting the image, and determining whether the MRI images of the brain have a tumor or not.

WEEK 3: LEARNING PROCESS
Wednesday, 09 March 2022
This week, I studied and researched how to use and try to adapt the Image Processing tools in MATLAB software with a few videos from youtube related to Brain Tumor Detection System.
Below I share some links to the videos:
"A series of introductory tutorials for beginners to use MATLAB for image processing. From how to read RGB, indexed images, conversion and extraction of images also implement the segmented of the images."
Image Processing in MATLAB (Complete Course)
"Image processing in MATLAB is easier than image processing using OpenCV. With a little guidance, a learner can start applying image processing concepts using MATLAB. This tutorial provides that guidance."
WEEK 2: WORKSHOP 1
Wednesday, 02 March 2022
Today's workshop is about the general briefing of the Final Year Project. The briefing conducted Online – Microsoft Teams, the attendance of all FYP students is compulsory.
The briefing conducted by Sect. Reps Mr. Shaiful Osman. In the briefing, the FYP committees have briefed us about:
- Types of Assessments, Marks, Weightage (Credits and Duration, Scope of Projects, Change Title for FYP 2)
- FYP Rules & Regulations (Submission date of Project, Report, Technical Paper)
- Activities Throughout Semester (Project Assessment, Presentation Day)
Tuesday, March 1, 2022
WEEK 1: CONTINUOUS PROGRESS FROM FYP 1
Sunday, 27 February 2022
This week is the first week for my Final Year Project 2 (FYP2). From now, I need to focus on the last semester's FYP1 proposed project. While during the semester break, I did detailed research and analysis for my proposed project to find more developments from the ideas and comments taken from both of my assessors during my FYP1 defense presentation.
My project "Development of Brain Tumor Detection System using Image Processing" is officially started.
